Our Commitment to Safety
Working underground in a large-diameter pipe has the potential to present certain safety hazards, including:
Pipe collapse
We work inside of pipes that are damaged and at risk of failing. Should a collapse occur while we’re inside the pipe, the outcome could be fatal, which is why we operate as safely as possible.
Toxic atmosphere
If a poisonous substance is present inside the pipe, whether in liquid, solid or gas form, simply being in the pipe can result in acute effects that can range from headaches and gastrointestinal illness to unconsciousness or even death. A toxic atmosphere may occur due to the presence of nitrates/nitrites, microorganisms, heavy metals, organic chemicals, fluoride and more.
Lack of oxygen
Since a pipe is a confined space, oxygen can be in short supply due to various reasons, which can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, headache and unconsciousness.
Flammable air
On the flip side, we could find that the space has an excess of oxygen, which can present an increased risk of fire and explosion. Some materials can burn vigorously or even spontaneously in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere.
Flowing liquid/debris
While we aim to work during times when the water levels in the pipe will be low, there is no way to guarantee that a sudden deluge of water won’t sweep in and cause injury or drowning. Any debris carried by the water can strike body parts, potentially causing injury.
Heat
Inside a pipe, like any enclosed, confined space, lack of ventilation can increase the risk of heat stroke or heat stress if conditions get excessively hot.
These hazards can become a larger risk depending on the size of the pipe, recent water table levels, weather conditions and severity of the pipe’s damage. While we cannot possibly presume to control weather or prevent natural occurrences, we can – and do – take all possible safety measures to keep our technicians safe.
How We Keep Our Team Safe
Firstly, we utilize pipe jacks to help prevent the pipe from collapsing while we’re working inside. We also carefully track the weather patterns to ensure we’re not caught inside during inclement weather. Additionally, we never go into a pipe alone; we work in pairs or teams, depending on the size of the project, utilizing the ‘buddy system’ to help keep each other safe. Finally, we always come prepared to a jobsite with the proper tools, equipment and PPE for the job.
Our team regularly receives up-to-date safety training and are required to handle equipment according to OSHA recommendations and materials according to their MSDSs.
Safety is our number one priority, both inside the pipe and outside of it. Our work helps to keep roads and railways safe and the water flowing through neighborhoods, farms and more.
